Qixi Festival: Chinese Valentine’s Day

This year’s Qixi festival falls on Thursday 4th August.

A 2000 year old Chinese myth tells the story of Niulang, an oxherd, and Zhinhu, a celestial weaver. Their love was forbidden, with the Milky Way formed to separate the two. The legend states that for one night a year, the magpies of the world form a bridge that allows the couple to reunite.

In honour of the star-crossed lovers, this day is celebrated as a festival of romance, with couples exchanging gifts similar to Valentine’s Day celebrations. Take a moment this Qixi Festival to appreciate the stars above, and gift your loved one a bouquet of red roses. Happy Qixi Festival.
