They don’t like to be fussed over when they’re in bloom, they just need a warmish climate or corner of your home, and a touch of humidity to flourish.
Here are a few simple tips to give your Cymbids the love they deserve so they keep on blooming each year:
Caring for Cymbidium Orchids When In Bloom
- Provide a warm, mild environment with a touch of humidity – nearby (but not directly in front of) a heater is almost perfect during the winter months
- Avoid direct sunlight – place in a southeast position around the home if possible
- Water very little – perhaps once every two weeks
Caring for Cymbidium Orchids After Bloom
- Snip off old flower spikes near the base to encourage next season’s growth
- Repot to a larger pot with a prepared orchid potting mix available from most nurseries
Styling Cymbidium Orchids

Creating a Table Centre
Don’t be afraid to cut your Cymbidium Orchid stem! One stem can be cut into two and styled with an ikebana stay-put for an elegant table centre piece. Place the shorter of the two cuttings in front at the base of the taller cutting to ensure balance and form.
