History
Not much is known about the provenance of Beechmont before January 1997, when avid gardeners Simon and Marcia Begg bought the property. At the time it consisted of horse paddocks and gardens containing a mix of European and Australian native trees and shrubs. The Beggs believed the area was likely cleared for timber at the turn of the 20th century and later used for dairying, potato crops, horses and propagating flowering shrubs. The most mature part of the garden is located near the entrance. This area features incredible beech trees, rhododendrons, camellias and other large deciduous trees, some of which are over 70 years old.
Today
Cherrie Miriklis, florist and owner of Flowers Vasette, purchased the property from the Beggs in 2013. She fell in love with the property – primarily for the gardens and the opportunity to supply Flowers Vasette with a unique bounty direct from the garden. What’s more, Cherrie saw Beechmont Garden Retreat as a place she and her florists could collaborate, getting back in touch with nature and the seasons to further fuel their creativity and sources of inspiration. Cherrie foresees opening the grounds for garden tours, events and floristry and garden workshops, while continuing to offer boutique accommodation.
The Seasons at Beechmont
Ask people in Melbourne what is their favourite season and they’re likely to say either Autumn or Spring. Beechmont is very much about seasonality and appreciating the moment so this garden offers up something for every season, and for every one.
Autumn
With mainly mature trees, Beechmont’s gardens in Autumn are gorgeous. The Autumn colours are magnificent everywhere. The autumnal light at dusk in the mountains is magical, a golden glow.
Winter
Of course not everyone loves the cold that comes with the Winter season, however who ever said Winter was the worst season for a holiday or a get together wasn’t thinking about the spirit of adventure that comes with doing the unexpected.
Winter at Beechmont is something else – gumboots, gloves, scarves, beanies not to mention fires, rugs, hot chocolate, steaming porridge and roast dinners.
Spring
Beechmont’s gardens are at their peak in Spring- as they should. The rains ease off and the days start to warm bringing with them new life. Spring is such a bountiful time at Beechmont everything, from bulbs to previously bare trees,‘springs’ to life.
