In Bloom: Water Lilies

28/01/2025

Known as the  beloved jewels of the summertime and Claude Monet‘s famously treasured flowers—water lilies are a beautiful accent to any garden or arrangement.

The fragrant flower has a rich history and is one of the oldest plants in the world, with fossils dating back to 100 million years ago. An interesting characteristic about them is that their petals open up in the sun and close at night; this peculiar trait has made it a spiritual symbol across various religions and cultures.

They start sprouting in late spring and bloom in the heat of summer. With their geometric architecture and ever-growing stems, water lilies are a wonderful choice for those who enjoy Bauhaus interior design or prefer something more unique.

With their bold large petals, water lilies are beautiful on their own in an arrangement. However, they are also great for adding structure to softer flowers such as Gypsophilia, Tuberose, Phalaenopsis Orchids, and Roses.

To ensure the longevity of your water lilies, here are some tips from our floral artists.

Floral arrangement with water lilies, hydrangeas

1. Always keep them in water

It is best to have the water level up to their necks as water lilies evaporate through their stems, this will prevent the lilies from drying and bending.

2. Choose an appropriate vase

To ensure the water lilies have enough water, make sure to choose a tall vase where the base of the flower is close to the rim.

3. Trim the stems daily

This tip goes for all flowers, but especially for water lilies as their stems can grow up to an inch every day. Trim the stem until it is vase height.

4. Ensure adequate light

Water lilies thrive in the sunlight and require a lot. Place them in the brightest spot of your house, but keep them away from direct heat.
