A child is not a burden to a mother, just like how a leaf is not a burden to the tree, or a petal is not a burden to the flower.
To celebrate Mother’s Day we welcomed four mothers and their families to the Beechmont Garden Retreat to explore what maternal love means to them.
First, we have Sophie Storen (née Cookes) the Founder and Director of Cookes Food, and her son Otis.

What is your favourite memory of celebrating Mother’s Day?
Otis was about 4 when he wore a yellow jumper & handed me a delicious bunch of yellow roses, he pressed them against his cheek & nicked his cheek with a thorn, he tossed the offending flowers on the floor & stepped on the buds. And that was that.

What is the most valuable lesson you have learned from your Mother?
How to be a mum & what a privilege it is. She was the most incredible mum & is a simply exceptional grandma (or namely Geeg).
If you could receive a bouquet full of love, what would it look like?
Lots of colour & wild flowers tied tight at the bottom with a dark green ribbon.
There would be little lady bugs on some of the leaves. But the scent would be gardenia because when I was a little girl mum used to put a single gardenia in a water glass next to my bed.
If your children picked a flower to represent you, which one do you think they would choose?
A messy bramble of roses, stuck to a fence post. A bit wild, trying hard, a little chaotic but with a nice perfume.
