On the 14th of December, the NGV held its annual glamorous black-tie gala, marking the opening of its world-exclusive Yayoi Kusama exhibition – ‘KUSAMA‘
‘KUSAMA’ not only traces her entire career, but also unveils her most recent installation Infinity Mirrored Room–My Heart is Filled to the Brim with Sparkling Light, 2024.
As proud ambassadors and sponsors of the National Gallery of Victoria, we worked alongside the Gloss Creative team, to create a series of floral sculptures to help bring the surreal beauty and infinite universe of Kusama’s technicolour creations to life.
As an ode to Kusama’s ubiquitous polka dots, we chose florals that were spherical in shape. For her, they represent the obliteration of self— not in a destructive sense, but as a means of uniting the individual with the vast universe.
Chrysanthemums, peonies, dahlias, and of course her beloved sunflowers were incorporated throughout the floralscape. All working in tandem to create exuberant geometric sculptures that Kusama is famous for.
With their “generous unpretentiousness” pumpkins have been a lifelong source of fascination for Kusama. We celebrated that by incorporating pumpkins into the sculptures and using spotted begonias (Begonia Maculata) to further transport guests into the dotted universe.
